The GTA Notchback was a short-lived option only available in 1988 and 1989. The GTA production numbers for these two years were 9,765 for U.S. market and 1,261 for Canada. Only 718 produced were notchbacks, with only 624 being delivered to the U.S. market making these pretty hard to find. After a great response to the 1987 GTA, Pontiac decided to offer two GTA models: an aerodynamic slope back and a notchback version. The thought for the notchback was to differentiate the GTA models from the rest of the Firebird line as well as lessen the "greenhouse effect" from the big rear hatchback glass. GM came up with idea, partially based on the appearance of the 1968 to 1976 Corvette. This 1988 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am GTA Notchback is powered by its 5.7L TPI V8 engine, backed by a 4-speed automatic transmission, and running to a limited slip rear end.
